Hamadryas Baboons

Hamadryas Baboons were considered sacred in Ancient Egypt being called Sacred Baboons.

These animals are now extinct from Egypt and are currently found in Ethiopia, Somalia, Saudi Arabia and Yemen.

Our Baboons

The males stand out from the females by having beautiful, long silver hair that stretches over their shoulders, referred to as a ‘cape’. When threatened, the males usually yawn, exposing 4cm long canine teeth.

Baboons love to groom each other, which enhances their relationships within their communities called “Troops”.

Hamadryas baboons make a dog-like bark when there is danger nearby.

Appearance & Behaviour

Meet Our Baboons on a Guided Tour

Our baboons are part of the guided tour experience, and guests have the opportunity to hand‑feed them while learning about their behaviour, social structure, and care. Our zookeepers guide all interactions to ensure the highest standards of welfare.

Sightings and feeding opportunities depend on the troop’s behaviour and comfort on the day.
