Our Meerkats
The meerkats enjoy an enriching life at ZAMBI in an enclosure resembling their natural Southern African habitats.
Meerkats are social animals that live in groups called mobs, clans, or gangs. A meerkat clan can often contain 20 individuals, but there have been super family mobs with 50 or more members.
Life in a Meerkat Mob
One of the most critical roles a meerkat plays is that of a sentry or watch guard. They are seen standing on their hind legs up on a high point. They have excellent vision and can spot predators in the air from more than 300 metres away. Their enclosure at ZAMBI provides them with safe areas such as tunnels and hollow logs where they can retreat if the sentry warns of danger.
At ZAMBI Wildlife Retreat, the meerkats have enrichment activities that stimulate their natural behaviours, ensuring they remain active and engaged. Our sanctuary also educates visitors about the importance of wildlife conservation and the unique characteristics of meerkats.
